Squirrel Girl and The New Warriors Are Coming To FreeForm
By Erik Swann
It looks like a new team of heroes will be joining Cloak & Dagger on FreeForm!
Marvel has really been experimenting when it comes to their properties on television, but this promises to be their most different one yet.
Marvel Television has officially announced that they will be producing a New Warriors series. The show has been given a ten-episode order at FreeForm, and will tentatively air sometime in 2018. New Warriors will be a big departure from the Marvel TV norm as it is being planned as a half-hour comedy.
In an exclusive report, The Hollywood Reporter was able to get the details on the upcoming series. One such detail is that Scrubs and Cougar Town veteran, Kevin Biegel is in negotiations to write and act as showrunner. According to reports, Biegel is also a huge Marvel fan.
THR also reports that the series is set to focus on six powered youths, who are living and working together. Using their “unconventional” powers and abilities, the team wants to make a difference in the world … even if the world isn’t ready for them. The series will also explore what it’s like to enter adulthood.

What is probably the most exciting aspect of this project is that fans will finally get to see the character, Squirrel Girl or Doreen Green, brought to life on-screen. As many know, Squirrel Girl is a massively loved character, who fans have actually wanted to see on the big-screen. Recently, actress, Anna Kendrick even showed interest in the role.
The trade describes the character as an empowering fangirl who’s tough, optimistic, and a natural leader. Of course, she will also have the powers of a squirrel including: acrobatic abilities, fighting skills, and talking to squirrels.
As expected, Marvel Head of Television, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory will executive produce the show along with Biegel. Loeb spoke briefly on his enthusiasm about the project, and why Marvel chose to re-team with FreeForm:
"“Marvel’s New Warriors have always been fan favorites, and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel-Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well. After the amazing experience we’ve had with FreeForm on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”"
FreeForm’s executive VP of Programming and Development, Karey Burke also expressed her excitement with the show, and how it lines up with the network’s goals:
"“FreeForm’s mission is to deliver incredible content to young adults, and Marvel Television seamlessly aligns with that mission – we couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with them on Marvel’s New Warriors.”"
