Star Wars: Episode IX has a release date in 2019
Star Wars: Episode IX has a release date, and the timing is perfect for the debut of Star Wars Land and Star Wars Celebration 2019.
It’s official! We now have a release date for Star Wars: Episode IX, and it’s a lot earlier than the December releases we have been seeing in recent years.
Star Wars: Episode IX will land in theaters on May 24, 2019. This is incredibly timely because it will serve as a tentpole for Disney’s summer movie releases, and it also puts the movie smack in the middle of the projected opening of Star Wars Land at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Florida. What better way to kick off the launch of a brand new land than with Episode IX to give it an even bigger push?
It’s important to note that there could always be production delays that will push Episode IX back to a December release, but with so many things going on in Spring and Summer of 2019, you can imagine that there is a huge effort to make the May date happen.
A May release for Episode IX also works well for Star Wars Celebration 2019. Though the event had been moving toward becoming an annual event, it was announced that there would be no Celebration in 2018 but there will be a Celebration in 2019. Celebration usually takes place in April, which would make it the best way to launch a full scale publicity blitz ahead of Episode IX’s release. As noted in the article below, my guess is that Celebration will return to Anaheim in 2019 so that it will be close to Disneyland as Star Wars Land prepares to open.
Next: Lots to celebrate, but no Star Wars Celebration 2018
Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in December 2017, the Han Solo standalone movie is scheduled for 2018, and now we have May 24, 2019 as the date for Star Wars: Episode IX.
