Her Cape 100 Things to Know About SDCC continues with #97: SDCC Banners, Part 1. The San Diego Comic Con banners are coming soon.
Every year, like the swallows returning to San Juan Capistrano, the San Diego Comic Con banners are hoisted aloft over the streets of Downtown San Diego and Harbor Drive, signaling the imminent arrival of the pop culture juggernaut. Once the banners go up, the city starts its transformation into a pop culture oasis.
There’s a sequence of events leading up to the arrival of the SDCC banners each year: Gator by the Bay, the Rock and Roll Marathon, and then SDCC. The banners have been the exclusive property of Disney and Marvel for the past few years, so what will they feature this year?
In previous years the banners have featured Big Hero Six, Ant-Man, and most recently the 2016 banners promoted Doctor Strange. With so many movies coming up for Disney and Marvel, the 2017 banners could feature any number of movies.
The obvious choice for the 2017 banners would be Thor, which arrives in theaters in November, or Pixar’s newest film Coco, also due in the fall. Star Wars: The Last Jedi doesn’t need as much promotion, so while it’s a possibility it’s not likely that we’ll see anything from Star Wars on the banners. My money is on Black Panther, whose teaser trailer was just released this past week.
It’s too early for Marvel to start pushing Captain Marvel, but given the current attention on Wonder Woman, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have Brie Larson in her Captain Marvel costume all over Downtown San Diego.
