Superheroes will always be larger than life. Their inspirational presence and good deeds make strong impressions on the audience. So it shouldn’t be strange that even the actors and actresses who play them go on to become role models. On Friday, June 9, 2017, we lost one of those role models—Adam West, who sadly passed away at the age of 88 after a short battle with leukemia.
Famous for his role as Bruce Wayne / Batman in the 1960s live-action Batman television series, West became synonymous with the character. His incarnation would later go on to become one of the most famous portrayals of the Caped Crusader.
I myself have very fond memories of wearing my mother’s blue dishwashing gloves and forcing my sister to play the role of Robin. We would fight imaginary super villains and scale our stairs as if they were tall skyscrapers. I know my memories are most likely not unique, as countless other children my age probably fought crime in that same imaginary playground.
To pay tribute to the man who brought joy to millions, the Mayor of Los Angeles will be projecting the Bat-Signal onto LA City Hall. Here’s DC’s official tweet announcing the event:
Here are the details of the ceremony:
When: Thursday, June 15, 2017, 9:00 p.m. PST
Where: Los Angeles City Hall, Spring Street Steps at 200 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Like the superhero he portrayed, West will continue to live on in the memories of fans who remember him as the “Bright Knight.” As Batman, he definitely brought a smile to people’s faces—and sometimes that’s just what is needed to save the day.
