Despite having to manage the “out there” source material, writer-director Scott Derrickson found a way to make the Sorcerer Supreme’s debut work. Derrickson’s lifelong infatuation with the character and his world definitely shine through here.

The visual effects (courtesy of Steve Ditko’s psychedelic artwork from the 1970s) are a sight to behold, and make this first Marvel film actually worth seeing in 3D. The story is nothing revolutionary. However, it helps to have Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead along with a strong supporting cast who can make this stuff relatively believable. All in all, this is an appropriately magical flick.
