Check out our unboxing of Funko’s Legion of Collectors July 2017 “Batman: The Animated Series” box which contains exclusive collectible items.

This month, Funko brings us a box dedicated to one of the most definitive incarnations of the Dark Knight — Batman: The Animated Series. The 1990s cartoon, lauded for its sophisticated storytelling and characterizations, is also responsible for launching the now famous DC Animated Universe, which includes various spin-off series and feature-length films.

Creator Bruce Timm drew inspiration for the cartoon from Tim Burton’s Batman film series and the Fleischer cartoons of the 1940s. This resulted in the series having a unique look all it’s own — gothic and anachronistic, it brought the Dark Knight back to his noir roots.

To this day, Batman: The Animated Series is ranked as one of the greatest cartoons ever created. Because of this series, many characters from Batman’s mythos have been redefined. Mr. Freeze, seen as a joke character since his creation in the comics, was given a depth unseen in any cartoon at the time. The episode which reintroduced the complex villain — “Heart of Ice” — garnered an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program.

The series didn’t just reinvent characters, it was also responsible for the creation of one of the most famous and well-known villains in Batman’s rogues gallery — Harley Quinn. The character made her debut in the series and would later become a staple of the comics. Her most recent incarnation was in the DCEU’s Suicide Squad (2016) where she was played by actress Margot Robbie.
