Actress Lucy Liu will be directing the season premiere of Luke Cage!

Production is well-underway on the second season of Marvel’s Luke Cage, as the hit Netflix series is currently filming in New York. Most of the behind-the-scenes details are still relatively unknown, but now we know who will be helming the first episode of the season.

Marvel has announced Lucy Liu will be directing the season premiere of the show. In a press release, the actress expressed her excitement about teaming up with Marvel and Netflix:

Marvel Head of Television Jeph Loeb also commented on collaborating with Liu:

"When you’re dealing with a bulletproof man, it helps if you have a bulletproof Director. Lucy brings a keen eye, a superb sense of story, and an obvious love of actors.  She is rocking Luke Cage 2."

This pick-up is a very pleasant surprise. Although Liu is known primarily for her acting roles, she also has a few directing credits under her belt. Her first time in the director’s chair was for the short film Meena in 2011. She has also directed an episode of Graceland and four episodes of Elementary, which she also stars in.

At first glance, this may seem like an unconventional directing choice for Luke Cage. But, when you really think about it, getting someone who understands both action and actors to direct a show like this is a pretty smart decision.
