Everything you need to know about the D23 Disney Parks panel

In 2015 the Disney Parks panel at D23 gave us Star Wars Land and Avatar. In 2017 we get Galaxy’s Edge and so much more!

Big news came out of the D23 Expo Disney Parks Panel on Saturday. Fans hoping to learn more about Star Wars Land, Marvel’s expansion, and all of the up and coming projects at Disney Parks across the globe were rewarded with a goldmine of information about Disney’s plans for the next few years at Disney Parks.

Marvel President Kevin Feige was in the auditorium as the crowds poured in, hinting at a possible Marvel ride in the works. Ahead of the Disney Parks panel, fans were buzzing amid rumors that Marvel Land would take over A Bug’s Land at Disney California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort. (Read on before you get too excited….)

To kick off the presentation and put things in perspective, Disney Parks’ Bob Chapek mentioned the 145,000+ cast members who bring the Disney dream to life. He spoke of all of the achievements celebrated across all of the Disney Parks over the past year.

The first announcement for eager fans came with the official name for Star Wars Land. The new immersive land will henceforth be known as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. A very fitting name given that the plot of land in Disneyland is on the northern edge of the park. (I already kind of miss Star Wars Land) Galaxy’s Edge will feature experiences that are based upon individual guests. If you seem to be leaning toward the Dark Side, that will impact your experience in the new land.

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge will open first in Anaheim, followed by an opening at Walt Disney World.

Chapek also talked about the newest ride at WDW, “Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.” It’s the first Mickey Mouse ride at the resort.

Big changes are heading to EPCOT, with a new Ratatoulle experience and a Guardians of the Galaxy ride. Evidently, Peter Quill went to EPCOT when he was a kid. And WDW is also getting the same TRON coaster seen at Shanghai Disneyland, to arrive in time for the park’s 50th anniversary celebration. (It is 45 right now)

A new hotel, Disney Hotel New York: The Art of Marvel is heading to Disneyland Paris.

And speaking of hotels, Walt Disney World is also getting a new Star Wars luxury resort.

A new ship is being added to Disney’s Cruise Line, along with a new Beauty and the Beast production.

Toy Story Land will open next summer at Walt Disney World and Shanghai.

In 2018 the Paint the Night Parade is moving to Disney California Adventure (with a new float!) while Pixar Fest moves into both parks with fireworks and entertainment. The Pixar Play Parade is moving into Disneyland from DCA. And Paradise Pier will henceforth be known as Pixar Pier.

The Disney Parks panel saved the news about Marvel for last when they revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Mission – Breakout is the highest rated ride of all the Disney Parks.

It was also announced that Spider-Man and the Avengers are getting a new themed area at Disney California Adventure. Details, however, were disappointingly vague.
