Game of Thrones: Nobody puts Arya in the corner

Arya Stark continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the Game of Thrones season 7 finale “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

If ever there was a spinoff of Game of Thrones, I would hope it was nothing more than Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) going around Westeros kicking major butt. We’ve always known she was awesome, but like a fine wine she has improved as the seasons go by. In the season 7 finale of Game of Thrones, she doesn’t have to say much to prove her badassery.

Arya has always been a favorite. She’s smart and she has a plan, and she never ceases to amaze me with her cunning. She gets knocked down but always gets back up. She’s the kind of character that is fun to root for. In the latter half of season 7 it might have looked like Arya was about to betray Sansa, but she was in control the entire time, working to defend and protect her family as she always has.

In the season 7 finale there was an exchange between Brienne and the Hound that really shows how far Arya has come. Brienne reveals that Arya is very much alive, which seems to please the Hound. The Hound respects strength and Arya has strength in spades.

Brienne: “The only one that needs protecting is the one that gets in her way.”

Hound: “It won’t be me.”

After sparring with Arya, Brienne knows that Arya is a force to be reckoned with, and after being left for dead, the Hound does, too. The Hound acknowledges that he won’t be in her way at any point soon. There is probably more than a little pride in that dour expression of his, because he always knew how tough Arya was. And he admits he was trying to protect her as much as Brienne was. But Arya didn’t need their protection. She’s a force unto herself.

And that’s why we love her.

Though it might be well over a year before we see season 8, we know there is a lot to look forward to when Game of Thrones returns.
