Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion is scheduled to close on August 28 to get ready for a frightful good time as two holidays collide!

The hinges won’t be creaking on doorless chambers after August 28 as Disneyland’s classic Haunted Mansion attraction closes in order to prepare for the annual Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay. Haunted Mansion Holiday is when Jack Skellington, Zero, Oogie and the rest of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas crew arrive to deck the Mansion’s hallowed halls.

Way back in 2001 the Haunted Mansion was transformed into a stunning mashup of two holidays, Halloween and Christmas. I was there that first year and I can tell you that the staff was anxious to know what Disney fans thought. Back in 2001 Halloween was not the fete that we know today. Not only that, but Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion animated masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas was not as lauded back then as it is today, where it has become a mainstream and much-beloved Disney movie. Transforming the Haunted Mansion had never been done before. Mixing Halloween with Christmas was a big risk, and it paid off.

Since then, Haunted Mansion Holiday has been delighting guests across all of the Disney Parks, but Disneyland was the first park to enjoy Haunted Mansion Holiday so it will always be the original.

With the transformation, Mansion guests are taken on a journey to “find out what happens when two holidays collide.” The result is a fun romp through Halloweentown after a visit from Sandy Claws himself. Along the way you’ll see Zero, Sally and Oogie, along with a bevy of other colorful characters with a soundtrack that will surely get stuck in your head all day.

Haunted Mansion Holiday will reopen September 15 along with all of the other Halloween festivities at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, including Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. Special Halloween parties will take place after park hours for ticketed guests throughout the Halloween season, and after Halloween the celebration will continue right into Disneyland’s Christmas season.
