Is DC Comics actually in need of a cinematic universe?

DC Comics tried for a good while to create a world that Marvel and Disney have made. A virtual comic book world. This kind of project really isn’t easy. It’s surprising Marvel has been able to keep throwing high-quality stuff for this long with barely any hiccups.

Warner Brothers, who controls DC, has tried to match the standard of Disney but has failed. I think that DC doesn’t have to go down this same path. I think it’s alright to have the standalone movies.

See, it actually is a better fit from a comic book standpoint to do an entire universe where everything is connected and what happens in one movie dictates events two movies later. I get the idea that one movie is essentially one issue in this virtual comic.

However, it’s probably a better idea to go with a more traditional approach for movie making in this case. Let’s go back to the somewhat annoying sequel heavy theme that a lot of other franchises are doing.

DC might just not have the capability to do what Marvel is doing. So, let’s look at The Dark Knight series as an example of how powerful the standalone can be. Let’s start off nice and easy. Give your heroes time to themselves. Let’s get some good solo movies in.

If you want to have cast members crossover, that’s fine. But, it doesn’t have to be an entire unified universe with specific rules and standards. It really doesn’t have to be that way.

It’s like TV shows. Some shows are better with standalone episodes. These episodes run one after another with barely any reference to the previous episode. Then, some shows carry a story in such a way that, if you join in season 3, you’re going to be completely lost.

Disney made that storytelling work. DC can make the standalone work. Down the line, if it wants to create a stable universe, then it can go for it. Picture it. DC starts off slow. It gets used to making movies about superheroes. During those five years or so, you are mapping out a universe. Then, the contracts of the actors expire. Now, with standalone success under your belt, you create a universe with new faces. With so many versions of heroes in the comics, you can even flip origin stories and powers.

DC doesn’t need a cinematic universe. By trying to catch Disney, they are speeding up a process that took (and takes) years to work out. You know what happens when you do that? Batman V Superman. Just, no.

What do you think? Should DC let go of the universe and start with solo acts, or can the universe be saved?
