Patty Jenkins officially signs on for Wonder Woman 2 after inking a contract deal that makes history for female directors.

It’s official (but by no means surprising): Patty Jenkins has officially signed on for Wonder Woman 2. What makes this the massive news that it is has more to do with her history-making contract than the news itself.

There should never have been any question that Jenkins was going to return for the sequel to the biggest movie of Summer 2017, one that not only saved the summer box office but set records for female directors and set a precedent for the future of female-led superhero movies. The biggest question is WHAT TOOK SO LONG FOR WARNER BROS TO SIGN THE DEAL???? Jenkins was only under contract for one movie, but after all of this success could Warner Bros really think to switch directors now? Patty Jenkins is forever linked to Wonder Woman, as much as Gal Gadot is, and the thought of anyone else taking the helm at this point is crazy talk.

Now that the contract has been signed, Jenkins will be the highest paid female director in history.

Cool, right?

Absolutely. But even after all of her accolades, getting to this point in the deal wasn’t easy, hence the delays in finalizing her role.

Jenkins was paid a million dollars for Wonder Woman, a film that stayed in theaters all summer long and brought in over $400 million domestically and $800 million worldwide. Wonder Woman is now #20 on the all-time domestic box office charts.

That’s the reason the negotiations took so long. Warner Bros wasn’t about to let Jenkins go, but Jenkins needed the studio to show her the money. And they did.

With this deal, reported to be $7-9 million plus backend earnings, Jenkins will become the highest paid female director ever. Not only is this a major step up from her first paycheck, but it’s well above any of her peers. Jenkins will be paid as both a director and a writer, which is fantastic news because fans already know how much she values the story she’s telling and how that translates to a wonderful film.

Though fans will see Diana Prince again in November’s Justice League, they’ll have to wait until December 13, 2019 to see the next standalone Wonder Woman film.
