Gotham: Fish Mooney is officially dead this time
Though there’s a long history of characters coming back to life on Gotham, there’s one character that is gone for good this time.
It’s officially official: Fish Mooney is dead. That’s officially official because Gotham executive producer John Stephen made the announcement and there will be no miraculous resurrection for Jada Pinkett Smith’s sexy and sinister crime boss.
In an interview with Comicbook, Gotham EP John Stephen confirmed that this was Fish Mooney’s last hurrah: “Now, that one was it. At a certain point, you gotta say ‘Definitely.’ People die at a certain point, and that’s the second or third time they die [on Gotham].” Though she might be gone, Fish leaves behind a legacy in Gotham City as Penguin steps up to take her place.
Fish Mooney died a few times over the course of Gotham’s three seasons but somehow she kept coming back. After her stay at Indian Hill, Mooney returned with the ability to control people upon touching them. However, Mooney found herself at the pointy end of Jim Gordon’s knife after he went into a killing rage during the big fight in the season finale. Fish succumbed to her injuries, but not before telling Penguin to make Gotham City his own.
Though Fish Mooney will be gone, her protege will be stepping up in her place as Penguin takes her advice and opens the Iceberg Lounge as his base of operations, complete with a frozen Edward Nygma, aka The Riddler, on ice as the centerpiece.
Gotham has shown us that nothing is permanent, even death. Lovable baddie Butch took a bullet in the head in the season 3 finale but he’ll be back in season 4 as the man who will become Solomon Grundy. Butch wasn’t his real name, as it turns out; his real name is Cyrus Gold, and Gold is known for becoming Batman’s undead zombie foe. (Of course, being undead means he’s virtually unkillable, which goes along perfectly with Gotham’s never-say-die theme)
