What can be expected out of season 4 of Gotham?

Season 4 of Gotham is just around the corner and we are excited to see what villains Detective James Gordon will come across. However, there were a few hints from the season 3 finale to what we can expect in season 4.

In the season 3 finale, Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin) finally bested Ed Nygma (The Riddled) by trapping him inside a giant ice cube, courtesy of Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze). Later, Penguin reveals to Ivy his plans for a new nightclub: The Iceberg. Any guesses on what or who will be the central attraction? If you guessed a frozen Ed, then you’d be correct. It would be interesting to see in season 4 how Ed escapes from the ice.

After his death, Butch is retrieved by the scientists from Indian Hill who reveal his true identity: Cyrus Gold. Obviously, the creators of Gotham hinted at a new villain in season 4. Fans of the Batman comics will recognize Cyrus Gold becomes Solomon Grundy. As Grundy rises from the dead, what form of revenge will he seek out? Will he look for Barbara Kean?

Speaking of Ms. Kean, last we saw her, she was left dead after an electrifying fight with Tabitha Galavan. As we’ve seen in Gotham, the dead don’t stay dead. Viewers should expect to see Barbara return in season 4. If she does return, how will killing Barbara affect Tabitha’s relationship with her?

In the season 3 finale, Selina Kyle runs into Tabitha while looking for Barbara in hopes to gain a mentor. A young Catwoman emerges when Selina handles Tabitha’s whip with ease. Amazed, Tabitha takes Selina as her apprentice. It will be exciting to watch Selina’s transition begin to take place in season 4.

Another transitioning character we got a sneak peek of in the season 3 finale, was that of Bruce Wayne. After a heart-to-heart with a hospitalized Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce realizes that avenging his parents’ deaths hasn’t fulfilled him. In order to go forward, Bruce needs something worth fighting for and protecting. We see at the end of the finale a masked Bruce fight to protect innocent victims of Gotham. Of course, we are going to see how his transition will fare with Alfred and his approval of Bruce putting himself in danger.

Selina and Bruce are on the verge of going down two very different paths, and they didn’t leave things on good terms at the end of season 3. However, as we’ve seen in past seasons, they always find one another when there’s a crisis. I think we can expect to see both Selina and Bruce struggle to find the balance between their relationship and who they are becoming.

Finally, our beloved detective. At the end of season 3, we saw Gordon struggle with the Alice Tetch virus, but finally having the mental strength to administer the cure to Lee Thompkins and himself. Lee has packed her bags and left Gotham (again), but will we see her return in season 4 now that she seems to have forgiven Gordon for killing Mario Falcone? Will Gordon wait for her or will he have moved on to another love interest?
