S.W.O.R.D. could be coming to the new season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ended its fourth season on a massive cliffhanger. The finale showed the team being abducted by mysterious agents. In the closing minutes, Coulson was then seen on what appeared to be a space station. Well, now, we have a better idea of what’s coming up for him and his team.
EW has released the official teaser poster for the show’s fifth season. The one-sheet doesn’t reveal too much, but it does confirm that the team is indeed headed to space:
Immediately, after season four concluded, fans began to speculate where things might be headed. Most theorized that the show would be bringing S.W.O.R.D. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) is an intergalactic, peacekeeping organization that handles extraterrestrial threats. In essence, they’re the S.H.I.E.L.D. of space. Coincidentally, the group was originally created for the comics by S.H.I.E.L.D.’s co-creator, Joss Whedon.
During its run, the show has explored a number of different elements not featured in the MCU films. It introduced us to Inhumans and the technologically advanced (and dangerous) LMDs. We even got a taste of the supernatural with Ghost Rider. Adding S.W.O.R.D. to the mix would only continue to that trend.
It’s still too early to say exactly how things will pan out, but this new setting definitely has the potential to create some intriguing stories.
