Did you see the preview for the rest of Star Trek: Discovery?

The premiere episodes of Star Trek: Discovery were good…but the preview for the rest of the season looks even better. I’m intrigued.

I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t sure how I felt about Star Trek: Discovery going into the premiere. There had been so many misfires, delays and rumors that after a while I stopped listening because there was just no point to it. When it aired, I’d watch. And watch, I did.

If you’ve read my review of the first two episodes, you’ll note that I was entertained but not overwhelmed. Something was missing. There were things I wanted more of. By the time the first two episodes were over I wasn’t sure what to think.

And then I saw the preview for the rest of the season.

Now I’m hooked. I need to see more.

Everything that I really wanted to see more of is in the preview for the rest of the season. Michael Burnham is part of a rogue Starfleet project after pleading guilty to a number of charges that put her on the fringe of Starfleet. (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story/Jyn Erso comparisons, anyone?) She’s allowed to be the badass that was only slightly visible in the first two episodes. And she has a fascinating story that we want to learn more about.

I have seen some Trekkies lament the fact that this version of Star Trek is a lot more hostile. Starfleet is a peacekeeping force and yet this whole series is based upon a war that was started when Burnham accidentally killed a Klingon. We haven’t seen a setting like this; not even Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was in a war zone in this sense. (They were in a post-war zone trying to maintain peace between the Cardassians [Yes, Kardashians was on the tip of my tongue] and the Bajorans, and that interplay is what gave DS9 such a deep and thought-provoking story)

Like it or not, Starfleet is embroiled in a battle with the Klingons and the events of the season premiere will no doubt inform the series for a long time to come. Though the circumstances are unfortunate, Burnham seems to really be in her element in an environment when she can use all of her talents, especially her mental capabilities and her physical strengths, to tackle problems head on.
