The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a redundancy problem

Is there an issue with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of, if not the single most ambitious undertakings in cinematic history. Under the watchful eyes of Disney and Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios has released 16 movies (with 3 more coming within the next several months) and 7 television shows (with 2 more set to premiere soon).

The MCU is near and dear to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and annually releases some of the year’s most profitable movies. Their biggest release yet, Avengers: Infinity War is coming May 4, 2018 and will feature many heroes of the MCU facing off against the formidable Thanos.

Thanos is on a quest to collect all of the Infinity Stones and become the most powerful being in the Universe, likely (definitely) to wreak havoc. He’s sure to present the Avengers with all that they can handle and it’ll be all hands on deck in the fight to stop him.

So let’s take a look at all those hands, shall we?

The (Soon to Be) Assembled Avengers

  • Iron Man/Tony Stark – Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, all in an insanely advanced flying suit of mechanical armor.
  • War Machine/Col. James Rhodes – A normal guy in an insanely advanced flying suit of mechanical armor, stuffed full of an arsenal of deadly weapons.
  • Vision – An intelligent being powered by an Infinity Stone.
  • Scarlett Witch/Wanda Maximoff – A young Sokovian with magical powers.
  • Dr. Strange/Stephen Strange – A neurosurgeon with magical reality-bending powers.
  • Thor – A super-powered alien who can fly (with his hammer) and control lightning (also with his hammer).
  • Loki – A pretty strong alien who can do some shapeshifting stuff and a little bit of projection.
  • Drax the Destroyer – A super-powered alien who can make bad jokes and laugh at them.
  • Groot – A tree-like alien that can alter his physiology as he pleases.
  • Rocket Raccoon – A tech genius raccoon.
  • Gamora – A green alien assassin with advanced training.
  • Hulk/Bruce Banner – A brilliant scientist, who occasionally turns into a giant green rage monster.
  • Falcon/Sam Wilson – A normal guy in a flying suit.
  • Ant-Man/Scott Lang – A normal burglar with a suit that allows him to shrink and somehow gain super strength as a result.
  • Spider-Man/Peter Parker – A genius teenager who has super strength and agility.
  • Black Panther/T’Challa – King of Wakanda who has super strength and agility and a suit made of vibranium.
  • Captain America/Steve Rogers – A man with super strength and agility and a shield made of vibranium.
  • Winter Soldier/James (Bucky) Barnes – A man with super strength and agility and an arm made of vibranium.
  • Star-Lord/Peter Quill – Literally a regular dude with advanced training.
  • Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff – Literally a regular lady with advanced training.
  • Hawkeye/Clint Barton – Literally a regular dude with advanced training.

So, as you can tell a bunch of them have similar, if not exactly the same powers and one of them is literally a walking, talking raccoon.

It seems like all this redundancy will pose a huge problem in the fight against Thanos and his minions. Thanos is already powerful without his Infinity Gauntlet filled with Infinity Stones, but with them, he’ll be near invincible.

And I’m sure he’ll bring an army with him as well.

More from Superheroes

So how will a bunch of regular dudes in suits, super strong dudes with a physics-defying medal, a super strong dude with artificial spider webs, some assassins, handsome god-like aliens, 3 weirdos with ill-defined magical powers, a rage monster, a sentient tree and a raccoon, fare against him?

I’m going to say probably not great.

Sure, Thanos doesn’t have any Infinity Stones right now, but I’m sure he’ll have a few by the time he comes to Earth in Infinity War. Additionally, the dude has been destroying worlds up in Space just fine without them.

I guess it’s a good thing we’re going to have a sequel to Infinity Wars, otherwise, everyone would probably be dead. Hopefully it’s not too late to get Fox on the horn and see about getting some X-Men in their there a helping hand.
