Black Panther is Getting a New Digital Series from Nnedi Okorafor

The Black Panther is getting another new series from a Hugo, World Fantasy, and Nebula Award winner author Nnedi Okorafor.
While we all wait impatiently for the next trailer of the Black Panther movie, Marvel is giving us yet another way to read the further adventures of the king of Wakanda. Author Ta-Nehisi Coates relaunched the Black Panther brand with his new series several months ago and it has brought a lot of attention to the classic T-Challa.
Soon after that Marvel started a new series called the World of Wakanda by Roxane Gay, Yona Harvey with Ta-Nehisi Coates. As the title might have clued you in, that series was all about the world around this African king. Specifically focused on two women in the Dora Milaje, the private guard to the king of Wakanda. This series was hailed for its cast and portrayal of LGBT characters before being canceled.
Then Marvel gave Coates and Harvey another shot with Black Panther and the Crew before canceling it after only six issues. All of these series have been praised by critics, but apparently were low in sales. I’ve read them both and think they were solid comic book storytelling. Now Black Panther is getting another chance with award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor. This new series is strictly digital and is called Black Panther: Long Live the King. It will launch in December and be released bi-weekly. They haven’t said much about the basis of the series. We do know it will take place in the new world that Coates has built around the character and will follow the titular hero as he defends his kingdom from new outside threats.

Okorafor’s work in comics is not huge, but she did write a stellar one-off in the recent Venomverse War Stories comic book series. I hope this new series will have better legs than the previous Black Panther stories that have fallen to the wayside. I can give credit to Marvel for trying so many times to build the world around of Wakanda. However, I do wish that they would have given those new series like World of Wakanda and Black Panther and the Crew more of a chance to gain a following. I mean once the first trades of a series come out it can launch a whole new audience.
The Black Panther movie is still a ways off but that first trailer looked pretty amazing and the primary Panther comic series is still running strong so this new series will hopefully have some help gaining a following. The world around the Black Panther has plenty of room for all sorts of stories and I wish Nnedi Okorafor all the luck in the world.
