Injustice 2 released a new DLC character, Raiden. What should be known about this character?

Gamers, it’s time to return to the Injustice 2 universe! The second character of the fighter pack has arrived for buyers, and it’s no other than Mortal Combat’s deadly warrior Raiden. The character won’t be available for individual sale in a few days, but I received early access and was able to dominate some DC heroes with the Thunder God. Here’s my review of Raiden in Injustice 2.

Who is Raiden?

Raiden is actually not a comic book character, but a video game character from The Mortal Combat series. The franchise is celebrating its 25th Anniversary, using one of their most popular characters to enter the arena and show these DC nobodies whose boss. He is also known as the Thunder God (Take that, Thor) and is the protector of the Earthrealm. Raiden is a god who has many fantastic abilities, such as strength, flight, lighting bolt projectiles, and he is technically formless, but usually appears in his iconic straw hat. This character also has a unique ability, teleportation. This power plays an important role when it comes to his appearance in Injustice 2.

What’s the character’s gameplay like?

Die-hard fans of the Mortal Combat series should feel more than accustomed to Raiden. His moves are similar to his other games, with some extra powerful moves to adapt to the Injustice 2 style. My personal favorite is the “Electric Fly” move, where Raiden charges at his opponent and send him across the arena in a powerful attack. He also can shoot lightning bolt projectiles and can teleport behind his opponent, giving the fighter a more tactical advantage during the match. I also enjoy his “Electrocute” move which acts as an extra grapple for the players. Throw in any of these combos with a meter burn for some satisfying conclusions. His super move is beyond spectacular, incorporating the franchise’s logo to attack the enemy in a devastating blow.

I was not a big fan of the Mortal Combat series and did not have as much playing experience when it came to Raiden. I really enjoyed playing as Sub-Zero in the Injustice 2 video game and was excited to see what this other character would be like, I ended up being pretty disappointed. Raiden has some unique strengths, but without the combos, the character feels difficult to get use to. He has an iconic design and some good-looking attacks, but average players may not be comfortable using the player as a primary choice. I am not a fan of what I’ve seen so far when it comes to his dialogue options with other fighters. They feel very generic and not as creative as everyone else’s which was a huge letdown for me.

Is the character worth buying?

If you are a Mortal Combat fan, I highly recommend that you purchase the DLC character. Raiden is a beloved favorite and will definitely bring back some arcade nostalgia. He also comes with a skin of the character “Black Lighting” with the same moves and combos. Similar to Cyborg’s “Grid” skin or Captain Cold’s “Mister Freeze” skin that can be added in the Custom Character modes.

However, if you are not a fan of Mortal Combat, I don’t believe buying this character will be worth it. The character’s moves and fight style feels a little out-of-place from the other characters in the game. And that’s not because he isn’t a DC character, Sub-Zero is hands down one of the most well-rounded and exciting characters to play as in the game. Raiden could have been replaced with another Mortal Combat character or even another DC hero. For gamers without The Ultimate Edition, you can purchase Raiden on Oct. 6.
