Lucifer was in fine form in the season 3 premiere. His wings are back but he’s lost something else. Here’s a review of “They’re Back, Aren’t They?”

Monday nights are smoking hot again now that the devil is back. Lucifer Morningstar is back and so are his wings, but he’s lost something else that is very important to him. Let’s break down what happened in the Lucifer season premiere.

At the end of season 2, Lucifer was on the verge of telling Chloe everything about him. He wanted to come clean to her after everything they have been through, but his plans changed when he was abducted and taken to the desert. Upon awakening, Lucifer’s wings were back.

In the season 3 premiere Lucifer returns to Los Angeles to figure out who kidnapped him. Chloe dismisses the kidnapping until they find another person who was kidnapped and dumped in the same spot where Lucifer woke up. This leads to an investigation, of course, but things aren’t as they seem.

The addition of Tom Welling as Lieutenant Pierce adds a new dimension at work while Lucifer tries to figure out why he got his wings back and Amenadiel didn’t. Lucifer wants to know why the wings come back after he cuts them off again, and moreover he wants to know why his Devil Face is gone.

The season premiere shows us that Lucifer wants to tell Chloe everything, but now he’s forced to grapple with the loss of his Devil Face. That was going to be the best way to prove his identity to Chloe but now it’s gone and she thinks this is all a big joke. With no end to crimes for Lucifer and Chloe to solve, the big mystery of the season is why Lucifer is undergoing this transformation and who is behind it.
