Fans of Supernatural got their wish for a female centered spinoff. Wayward Sisters is happening this year. Here are all the details about this long-awaited spinoff.

The Supernatural fandom has been clamoring for a female focused version of Supernatural for a long time. This year their long running campaign for a spinoff paid off. A Supernatural spinoff focusing on popular character Sheriff Jody Mills will be introduced sometime during the upcoming season.

Supernatural kicks off the 13th season on October 12th. There is no confirmation of when in the season Wayward Sisters will be introduced. But it will be introduced in a Supernatural episode sometime this season.

Hollywood Reporter has a comprehensive list of everything that has been released about Wayward Sisters. Things that fans need to know about the new show include:

Sheriff Jody will be joined by another fan favorite female character, Sheriff Donna Hanscum. The two women appeared in several episodes together and had a great chemistry. Now they will be heading up the cast of Wayward Sisters.

Familiar Faces

Sheriff Jody and Sheriff Donna, played by Kim Rhodes and Brianna Buckmaster, are not the only Supernatural characters that will be featured in the spinoff. Claire Novak, Castiel’s human vessel’s daughter who decided to become a hunter after Castiel took her father as his vessel, will be in the spinoff. So will Annie “Alex” Jones who the Winchesters and Jody Mills rescued from a vampire nest.

Jody adopted both girls and both girls appeared in other Supernatural episodes that focused on Jody’s attempts to act as a friend, parent, and mentor to the two girls.

New Characters

Joining Jody’s clan of girls whose lives were forever changed by the supernatural are two new characters. Patience Turner and Kaia Nieves are also joining the family. Presumably it will be an encounter with the Winchesters and the supernatural that lands these girls in Jody’s care.

Patience has profound psychic abilities thanks to her relationship to another Supernatural character. She is the granddaughter of Missouri Moseley who the boys ran across back in season 1.

Kaia has a special ability too. She has the ability to walk between worlds when she is asleep. She is overwhelmed trying to process this ability on her own. So, she will be taken in by Jody to learn to harness and control her ability.

Wayward Sisters Is Only Happening Because Of The Fandom

Supernatural has been a big hit for the CW and is the channel’s longest running show. But the show doesn’t have a great history when it comes to the treatment of female characters. Even though the fanbase is overwhelmingly female many of the strong female characters have been killed off or used as tropes throughout the show. There was a huge outcry from the fandom when fan favorite Charlie played by Felicia Day was killed off in a storyline that didn’t seem to fit the show and felt rushed.

Wayward Sisters is a nod to the fans, who have been begging for a spinoff that would focus on the strong female characters that the show has introduced over the years. Well, the ones who are still alive anyway. And Jody Mills and Donna Hanscum are fan favorites. The spinoff is a direct result of the fandom’s campaign for a show that followed the adventures of these two beloved characters.

Even the title comes from the fans, indirectly. The fan campaign wanted the show to be called “Wayward Daughters” as a nod to the Kansas song “Carry On My Wayward Son” that is used to represent the Winchester brothers. But “Wayward Sisters” is fine too.

Supernatural is a show that has never taken itself too seriously. The show has never been afraid to take risks and try new formats. So it’s perfectly in keeping with the character of the show for it to drop a spinoff into the regular season. And when Supernatural debuts for the fall season fans will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of Wayward Sisters.
