Supergirl season 3: Early expectations for the Girl of Steel
Season 3 of Supergirl is here, so what is there to expect from the show’s return?
Supergirl comes flying back in a new season this fall. The season 2 finale episode left us fighting back tears. As season 3 prepares to open, there are a few expectations and questions we hope to get answered.
Last season, Kara finally had a relationship with a fellow alien. I would be the first to admit that I was not “Team Mon-El” at first, and I probably changed teams more times than a free-agent athlete. However, deep down I will always be “Team Winn”, but I digress. When we were first introduced to Mon-El, he was obnoxious and self-centered. Definitely not a match for the hopeful Girl of Steel, but as season 2 progressed we peeled back those superficial layers and found a lovable character.
So now that Supergirl has made all of us fall in love with Mon-El, he gets ripped away in the final episode of season 2. By releasing lead into the atmosphere to drive away the Daxamites, Mon-El was forced to leave because of his lead allergy. However, we see his ship pushed off course in outer space. Will we see in season 3 what happens to Mon-El? Will Monara (Mon-El plus Kara) ever be reunited?
Since we’re on the topic of Kara’s love life, she is technically single now and so is James Olsen. Now that he’s found his calling as the Guardian, he’s proven to have his goals in line with Kara; saving the world and all that good stuff. Most importantly, James has proven to Kara and the DEO that he is more than capable to handle real danger. Will these two kindred spirits pick up their romantic relationship where they left off?
Fans of Supergirl will agree that it was awesome to see Cat Grant return at the end of season 2. While James was a decent substitute, there’s no real replacement for the Queen of Media. Fans will be happy to know that she is returning in season 3. According to Chancellor Agard and Natalie Abrams of Entertainment Weekly, Calista Flockhart will return to Supergirl season 3 as Cat Grant. As exciting as this is, what does Cat’s return mean for CatCo?
In the season 2 finale, Cat clearly knows that Kara is Supergirl when she says to herself “go get ‘em, Supergirl” as Kara runs off to answer a distress call. Will Cat try again to get the exclusive with Kara revealing herself to the world as Supergirl? If the season 2 finale was any indicator, it seems that Cat will keep Supergirl’s identity a secret.

As far as “secret” identities go, practically everyone in Kara’s life knows she’s Supergirl except her new BBF Lena Luthor. Despite Supergirl being the beacon of hope, we’ve seen on the show that she’s not perfect and has prejudged Mon-El for being a Daxamite, and Lena for being a Luthor. Whatever prejudices prevented Kara from trusting her in the beginning, Lena has proven that she is not her brother Lex. The longer Kara waits to include Lena into her world, the more in jeopardy her relationship with Lena becomes.
Finally, what trouble can we expect from the villains in season 3? In the finale, we were teased with a scene depicting Reign’s arrival to Earth. Known in the comic as a Worldkiller, it will be interesting to see how Reign is introduced in the show and how she becomes intertwined with Kara. Also, its possible we haven’t heard the last of Cadmus. Since working side-by-side with Supergirl and the DEO in the season 2 finale, will Cadmus see that not all aliens are the enemy? And will we see Jeremiah return to his family?
