American Horror Story Cult 706 review: Tangled webs

We have arrived at the point in American Horror Story Cult when the season starts going sideways. Here’s my review of AHS Cult “Mid-Western Assassin.”

Tonight’s episode of American Horror Story Cult started with a message that the original cut of the show was edited out of respect for the victims of the Las Vegas tragedy. The full version is available on demand for anyone who wants to see it.

That said, the opening started with a bang – literally – as Kai’s rally is interrupted by an active shooter. It’s the identity of the shooter that is so incredibly shocking…because it’s Ally.

Kind of.

Episode 706 is the turning point in American Horror Story when things start to twist around. Take everything you know and throw it all out the window. AHS is known to throw a wrench in the system halfway through the season. It’s also the point when cast members start dying.

As it turns out, Kai was behind Meadow’s appearance at Ally’s house. He set the whole thing up so that Ally would believe that she has an ally in all of this when in truth she was being played. In the final moments of the show, which takes us back to where the show started, we see Ally trying to talk Meadow out of shooting people. In the end Meadow kills herself but the whole scene looks like it was Ally the whole time.

What this tells us is that Kai’s control extends much deeper than we could have possibly imagined. He knew full well that a seat on the city council wouldn’t mean anything, but if he was a martyr he could be elevated to the national level. He told Meadow to shoot him in the leg. And he set everything up so that the woman with tons of phobias would be caught in the crosshairs.

This episode shows us beyond a doubt that Kai Anderson is in control. He has the uncanny ability to see every angle and predict every possible reaction. This madman has a plan and so far everything is falling right into place. That’s what makes this season so chilling. It’s hitting on so many societal issues, but at the same time it’s a cautionary tale for what happens when people who feel marginalized decide to make themselves known. In a lot of ways, it’s that very notion that makes Cult one of the most terrifying seasons of all.
