The Winchester brothers are back for Supernatural season 13, but it looks like they are really alone this time.

Supernatural kicked off season 13 on a somber note. At the end of season 12 the Winchesters lost just about everyone they care about. Mary is trapped is in alternate world with Lucifer. Castiel is dead. Crowley is dead. And now they have to deal with Lucifer’s child.

Jack, Lucifer’s half human and half angel child, is a newborn but is now a teenager. He explains in the episode that he had to grow up fast because the world is dangerous. And for him it definitely is. The Winchester boys aren’t the only ones looking for him.

A trio of butt kicking, smart mouthed, angry angels are also looking for Jack because it’s a mandate from Heaven that Nephilim can’t be allowed to live. But even Heaven hasn’t come up against a threat like Jack before.

Jack seems unsure about who or what he is. He has immense power but can’t control it. Is it possible that he could be influenced to use his powers for good instead of evil? Sam thinks so. But Dean is sure that Jack needs to be killed before he does any serious damage to the world.

North Cove

Jack wanders away and ends up in North Cove. His strange behavior and nakedness attract the attention of the son of the sheriff who brings Jack to the station to try to figure out what his deal is. Sam and Dean track him to the police station and explain to the sheriff that they kill monsters.

While the sheriff is processing that the angel trio show up to kill Jack. One of the highlights of the episode is watching Dean face off with the smart mouthed female angel who tells him that Castiel is really dead this time and it’s all Dean’s fault. She also apparently has ninja skills because she’s one of the few people to ever best a Winchester.

While she is fighting Dean another angel attacks Sam, who is guarding Jack. After a pretty severe beatdown Sam draws a sigil on the floor in his blood and sends two of the angel away. But the third, the one fighting with Dean, manages to sink her angel blade into Jack.

Amazingly, the angel blade has no impact on Jack. Whatever Jack is even an angel blade can’t hurt him. That means he could be the biggest threat the Winchesters have faced yet. They agree to take him back to the bunker. Sam wants to try and influence Jack to be good, but Dean just wants to keep him contained until they can find a way to kill him.

“Father” Castiel

Jack repeatedly says that he’s looking for his father. His mannerisms and literal grasp of language are very reminiscent of Castiel when he was learning to be human. Jack reveals that he isn’t looking for Lucifer, his actual father. He’s looking for Castiel. His mother told him that the world was dangerous and that Castiel would protect him, so he’s been trying to find Castiel. He doesn’t take it well when he finds out that Castiel is dead.

Is Castiel Really Dead?

It certainly seems that way. At the end of the episode the boys burn Castiel’s body after Chuck refuses to answer Dean’s prayer and restore Castiel, Mary, Crowley, and all the others.

But Misha Collins, who plays Castiel, has already confirmed that Castiel will be back in some form. It’s highly likely that Castiel will turn up in the alternate reality where Mary and Lucifer are trapped.

The Alternate Reality

That raises some interesting questions about other characters who have been killed who might be alive in the alternate world. EW reported that Osric Chau is returning to Supernatural as Kevin Tran. Is Kevin alive in the alternate reality? Does that mean possibly Charlie is alive in the alternate reality also? Supernatural fans were very upset when Charlie was killed off. It would be amazing to see Felicia Day bring Charlie back to Supernatural.

Coming up at some point this season the new Supernatural spinoff Wayward Sisters is going to be introduced. The set up for the spinoff could come as early as episode 3 in season 13. Wayward Sisters follows Sheriff Jody Mills and Sheriff Donna as well as Claire Novak and Alex “Annie” Jones and some new characters as they tackle supernatural monsters and mysteries on their own.

The Supernatural season 13 premiere proves that even after 12 seasons there are more monsters to slay and more people to save and things to hunt for the Winchesters. The boys are at their best when the odds are stacked against them and they certainly seem like they’re in for a great but rough season.
