Important new details about the Supernatural spinoff Wayward Sisters have been released.

Supernatural fans have been waiting anxious for new details about the Wayward Sisters spinoff starting Kim Rhodes. Those details are finally here. In an EW exclusive executive producers gave the storyline of the show and revealed when the pilot will air.

The pilot will start with Claire returning to Sioux Falls. Hunting alone Claire’s been doing pretty well on her own. That was obvious when the Winchester boys found her again while working a case and she proved she’s a capable hunter.

But something will happen that will hit Claire hard, and will go home to Jody’s in Sioux Falls. When she gets there she will find out that Jody has taken in Patience, the granddaughter of Missouri Mosley who fans will remember from season 1.

And the other new character, Kaia, will appear soon after to round out Jody’s home for wayward girls. Together Jody and the girls, along with Sheriff Donna will try to take on and understand the supernatural creatures they encounter. They will also be trying to help Patience and Kaia understand and control their special gifts.

The backdoor pilot for Wayward Sisters will be Supernatural’s first episode of 2018. Episode 10 of season 13 is titled “Wayward Sisters” and should air in January 2018.

Supernatural’s “Female Problem”

Supernatural’s fanbase is overwhelmingly female. Yet the show for years has been the subject of criticism for its treatment of female characters. Female characters are often throw away characters that have no real character development and are one note tropes. Female characters that actually have some depth, like lesbian hacker turned hunter Charlie Bradbury, are often killed off whenever the Winchester brothers need a story boost.

Even Misha Collins, who played Castiel, once said at a fan convention that the show is “gratuitously misogynistic.” He also said:

"“I’m frankly surprised by the show. There’s stupid things—sorry people who write the show and everybody who works on it and everything, but there’s stupid things on the show that they shouldn’t do. Like, why do they have to say ‘bitch’ and kill all the women?”"

Will Wayward Sisters Solve The Problem?

That was several years ago but the show’s treatment of female characters hasn’t really improved. The Wayward Sisters spinoff will go a long way towards fixing the show’s missteps with female characters in the past.

By focusing on two of the few remaining female characters there is finally a chance that fans will see some actual character development of beloved female characters within the Supernatural universe.

The show’s creation is a nod to the fanbase that has been clamoring for it for a long time. If Wayward Sisters is done well it could finally redeem the show for past crimes against female characters and stem the criticism of the show’s reliance on trope driven characterizations of women.
