The New Mutants trailer combines X-Men and The Shining
Exactly six months ahead of its projected theatrical release, the trailer for The New Mutants dropped and gave fans a lot to think about.
Marvel and 20th Century Fox promised that The New Mutants would be unlike any X-Men movie that came before it, and the newly released trailer proves that this isn’t a superhero movie – this is a horror movie. It’s a horror movie set in the world of the X-Men, only the X-Men aren’t involved.
This is a standalone film based on a comic book series dating back to 1982 that followed the story of young mutants who attended Charles Xavier’s school, but none of those elements transfer into the Josh Boone-directed film. This is a terrifying movie that shows a group of teens in a mental asylum under the pretense that they are so dangerous they can’t be trusted in the outside world. Dr. Cecelia Reyes (Alice Braga) likens the youngsters to “baby rattlesnakes” but it’s not clear from the trailer if she’s actually trying to help them or if she is an instrument of their torment.
Take a look at the chilling trailer:
The haunted house aspect of the movie stems from a creepy asylum (which is plenty terrifying, right?) and one of the young mutants. Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt), also known as Mirage, has the chilling ability to project the deepest desires – and fears – of anyone around her. It was one of these projections that might have led to the death of her parents. Is the asylum actually haunted, or is Danielle behind it? Or are there much more sinister things at play here?
