X-Men: New Mutants trailer is scary as hell and not your typical hero movie

The first trailer for New Mutants was released on Friday, and it won’t be your typical superhero flick.

If you need more comic book movies in your life, 2018 will fulfill that need. From Avengers: Infinity War to Black Panther and Venom, there will be plenty of blockbuster films on superheroes and villains in the next calendar year. One that may get overlooked in the midst of these Marvel films, is X-Men: The New Mutants.

The New Mutants is the latest X-Men movie and will be the first to hit theaters since Logan in March 2017; this saw Hugh Jackman reprise his role as Wolverine, one last time. New Mutants follows young mutants that recently received powers, only to be held against their will in a secret facility, according to the premise from IMDB.

On Friday afternoon, the trailer for New Mutants arrived. Marvel Studios didn’t produce it, as it came from 20th Century Fox, identical to previous X-Men movies. These usually get handled a little differently, and given what the first trailer showed, New Mutants will be unlike any superhero film of the past few years.

This looked straight out of a horror movie, one that deserved to hit theaters in October. Instead, the spooky trailer arrived that displayed edge-of-your-seat potential. Random things and creatures popped out from every which way, and looked like it will have the Mutants on the run for the majority of this film.

A comic book movie as a horror film will be an interesting test. Marvel films featured lighter tones, while DC Comics went down a darker path, only to lighten up a bit, with Wonder Woman. If New Mutants succeeds, will it start a trend for other hero flicks like Venom in October 2018?
