Carlena Britch talks about Supernatural, strong women, and fries

Supernatural’s Carlena Britch talks to Her Cape about Miriam, strong female characters, and what it was like to beat up Dean Winchester.

The high point of Supernatural’s season 13 premiere was a wise cracking angel with some mad ninja skills. Recently Carlena Britch talked to Her Cape about working on show, Miriam’s unique skill set, and the Supernatural fandom:

How did you get the role on Supernatural?

"I had read for the show a few times before on earlier seasons and really believed it would come down to the right timing and character. When Miriam was introduced in Season 13 – an even more versatile and colorful character than anything I had read for before – I had both my fingers and toes crossed. I’m so fortunate to the writers for taking the chance on her!"

Were you a fan of the show before being cast?

"I was! I am a huge fan of sci-fi and horror (and really anything that gets my blood pumping!)The show does a brilliant job twisting and turning things around to keep it exciting, even after twelve seasons."

Miriam was a bright spot in an otherwise somber episode. Was it a challenge to nail both the comedic elements and the fight scenes?

"I’m a firm believer that if it ain’t challenging you, it ain’t worth it! Essentially Miriam is two different characters in one, sort of an angel with a split-personality, and I loved the opportunity I got to make the crew both laugh and cringe from video village."

Miriam also had some pretty impressive fighting skills. Have you done a lot of fight heavy roles?

"I have been training heavily over the last two years in martial arts to prep myself for all the superhero and supervillain roles I’ve dreamt of playing since I was a little girl. In addition, my 18 years of professional dance training has definitely given me a lot of confidence and strength."

What was the cast like to work with?

"It felt like I was working on Thanksgiving; all the cast and crew members function like an actual family – from inside jokes and pranks to an incredible level of trust and understanding. I feel extremely grateful to have joined their party!"

Supernatural has a pretty devoted fanbase. Were you surprised by their reaction to Miriam?

"To be honest, yes! I’m so happy to have received such positive feedback even though I kicked the crap outta their one and only. (Sorry Dean!) I love all the interacting we’ve had through social media and the fun tweets about wanting fries! (Which I’m still waiting for by the way!)"

On Supernatural death is rarely a final condition. Would you like to bring Miriam back at some point? Or maybe have her cross over to the Supernatural spinoff, Wayward Sisters? She’d be a great addition to a show that is focused on strong female characters.

"I would LOVE to be back! I picture Miriam appearing out of nowhere in the back of the Impala one day and Dean noticing her in the rearview mirror, rolling his eyes.The ‘Wayward Sisters’ would be a dream to work on; we need more bold and brave female characters to inspire and encourage our next generation of leaders!"
