Anthony and Joe Russo’s alleged departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be a positive.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been delivering some amazing superhero movies since the first Iron Man movie back in 2008. Today, the studio has been releasing juggernaut blockbusters during “Phase 3.” Thor: Ragnarok is shaping up to be one of the best of 2017, and Black Panther’s awesome new trailer has us all excited. But the big one fans are impatiently waiting for is Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 (a new character has been added to this movie).

These epic pieces of cinema will be directed by the Russo Brothers, who have also directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War for Marvel Studios. Word on the street is the duo may retire from directing Marvel movies after those last two Avengers sequels are released. While the majority of fans aren’t on board, I’m here to tell that while this may sound bittersweet, it is a good idea.

First off, directing a feature film is challenging. But, directing a good feature film is twice as challenging, and these guys have accomplished that twice with the Captain America sequels (I wasn’t talking about You, Me and Dupree). To strike lighting in a bottle twice like that in the same franchise is very rare. It is very difficult for the same director(s) to make so many great movies in the same series without losing some edge. I’m not saying that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 won’t be great, if anything those movies are basically going to be one long film that was split in half. Directors usually get fatigued when staying on a project for so long, there are plenty of examples in the history of cinema.

Christopher Nolan directed critically acclaimed films Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and then there’s The Dark Knight Rises. The third installment was still pretty good, but the movie doesn’t compare to the other two near masterpieces that precede the finale. Peter Jackson directed the award-winning Lord of The Rings trilogy, years later he decided to tackle three more Hobbit films which ended up being very disappointing. Francis Ford Coppola directed cinema classics The Godfather and The Godfather: Part Two, then he finished the trilogy with The Godfather: Part Three which is stilled considered one of his worst movies ever. The list goes on and on, when the same director stays with a franchise for so long it starts to lose momentum.

With the Russo Brothers potentially gone, it opens room for other young and talented directors to come in and bring new energy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Overall, it could be a win-win for everybody involved and may lead to an exciting new future to this incredibly successful studio. This is because it allows Marvel Studios to welcome new perspectives to direct these movies and it gives Joe Russo and Anthony Russo the freedom to pursue other projects. I think directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will give the Russo brothers the perfect opportunity to go out on a high note.
