Who is the scariest villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

I am a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the movies they put as they aid Disney’s quest for world domination.

I am also a huge fan of Halloween which, not so coincidentally, was yesterday.

So, in honor of this spookiest of holidays, we will embark on a quest to discover who is the scariest of all the villains in the MCU, with me serving as your guide.

In order to do so, I will rank the villains based on 5 distinct categories.

  1. How scary they look
  2. How evil they are
  3. How intelligent they are
  4. How powerful they are
  5. Miscellaneous

The Not so Scary

In order of appearance:

  • The Iron Monger “TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE…WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!!”
  • Whiplash “I want my bird. MY bird.”
  • King Laufey and the Frost Giants/Loki “I could have done it, Father! I could have done it! For you! For all of us!”
  • Loki/The Chitauri “Kneel before me. I said KNEEL!”
  • Malekith “Thor, your bravery will not ease your pain. Your family, your world will be extinguished!”
  • Zemo “Mission report December 16, 1991.”

Now, I suppose you could argue that Loki is scary, after all, he betrays his family numerous times and is incredibly cunning, but I just don’t see him as a true villain, but more of an anti-hero.

10. Kaecilius

Physical Horror-3/10 Listen, I know Mad Mikkelson is pretty scary, at least in theory. But to me, he’s more a passionate, maniac, or a manic genius. And I know the weird dark stuff around his eyes is supposed to be scary too, but I didn’t feel that at all. On top of that, he isn’t very physically imposing either.

Evilness-8/10 Kaecilius very casually kills anyone who gets in his way, whether they be his former friends and colleagues, or random people. That’s pretty evil.

Intelligence-1/10 A couple of things here. First off, the dude rips out a few of the pages he needs when he could have very easily just taken the entire book, if not the entire library. Second, his plan is to invite an all-powerful monster from the Dark Dimension to the Earth, in order for said monster to rule it. In the bargain, Kaecilius and his followers will get to live forever. (Because the Earth would be in the Dark Dimension, which sounds like a terrible place to be for a minute, let alone live forever in.)

Power-7/10 Without a doubt Kaecilius is powerful, BUT he also barely beats Doctor Strange during the fight in the London Sanctum and Strange is a newbie. He does absolutely annihilate the entire Hong Kong sanctum and Strange is only able to ultimately defeat him by annoying Dormammu so much that he agrees to take all the zealots off the Earth.

Miscellaneous-3/10 A pretty bland villain, all in all, Kaecilius is driven by his beliefs and arrogance. Marvel didn’t really bother hashing him out, the point of Doctor Strange was to introduce Strange’s powers that will likely serve as an Ex Machina at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

Final Score: 22
