Star Wars to receive new film trilogy from The Last Jedi director

The Star Wars universe will expand beyond the Skywalker’s, receiving a brand-new trilogy.

In December, the second part of the third Star Wars trilogy, The Last Jedi, will hit theaters. This started in December 2015, with The Force Awakens, taking place 30 years after the original trilogy of the 1970’s and 80’s.

The final installment will be released in December 2019. However, it won’t be the conclusion to this franchise, as there’s another trilogy on the way. StarWars.com announced that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will create a new Star Wars trilogy, with original characters and a story that takes place in another part of the galaxy. Johnson will write and direct the first film.

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, praised Johnson’s work on The Last Jedi. Given her words and the absence of drama during this film’s creation (unlike Solo and Episode IX), the relationship between the two sides looks strong and ready to dive into a new journey.

"“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”"

A non-Skywalker trilogy is unheard of in the Star Wars universe. The only film that didn’t focus on the classic characters was Rogue One (Darth Vader was only a subplot of the movie).

Going in this direction creates endless questions. Do Jedi’s exist in another part of the galaxy? Is there another ruthless villain like Darth Vader, or a developing one like Kylo Ren and the First Order? Will there be references to the previous movies?

Before this, the first film needs to go into production. With Episode IX over two years away, it would be difficult to believe anything transpires before then, except the completion of a script and casting. Maybe it gets a 2021 release?

There are plenty of variables at play. All we know is another Star Wars trilogy will potentially hit theaters in the 2020’s and continue the legacy of this franchise.

Oh, and if the third part of this new trilogy hits theaters in 2027, it will mark 50 years of Star Wars. Feeling old yet?
