Thor: Ragnarok is a great movie but has an overwhelming issue.

Thor: Ragnarok was one of the most imaginative and entertaining movie experiences of the year. The action, the comedy, the fun atmosphere, almost everything in the film was absolutely amazing. Although I talked about how good it is, there was still one element that was bothering me when I walked out of the theater. Read below for what that is, and of course, massive spoilers ahead.

Ragnarok happened, the giant fire monster known as Surtur was resurrected from the Eternal Fire and he got to destroy Asgard, the home of Thor, Loki, and other thousands of Asgardians. Now yes, we never really were given an exact number of the population, but based off the crowd shots in this movie and the size of the Asgard setting, I think thousands is being generous, but it can definitely be more.

So, you have all these innocent people in one place hiding from Hela, and the plan turns into using Gorg’s spaceship to evacuate. The spaceship looks very big and out of all the unbelievable and fantastic elements that filled this movie, the idea that all of these people could fit on a tiny ship seemed a little too unrealistic to me. And yes, we all laughed when Gorg made that joke about rebuilding foundations as Surtur obliterates everything, but that joke instantly became unfunny as you look at everyone’s sad faces as they watch their home be destroyed.

But don’t worry, King Thor (who lost an eye, by the way) has the great idea of taking thousands of Asgardian refugees to the already overpopulated planet Earth. Thais where the movie ends, just like that. I just really felt the ending of the movie left off on a bad note, the whole movie is a fun joyride with adventure and hilarious moments, and then concludes on a somewhat downer. And yes, I know the “post-credits scene” features Thanos’ ship arriving, but that got me thinking. I wasn’t sure if they knew how to conclude this story, or if they had to force the story to the specific point of meeting with the Mad Titan.

When you think about it, the ending of Thor: Ragnarok feels really depressing and identical to Avengers: Age of Ultron (Reinforcements rescuing refugees using a giant ship from a floating city that’s about to blow up). In the movie, they hammer in the idea that Asgard is it’s people it’s not a place. I don’t necessarily agree with that. Asgard being a magical and heavenly like setting is what makes Asgard. That idea that those people could just start over in Texas or something doesn’t appeal to me (but Skurge the Executioner would have loved that idea).

That’s all I was thinking about as the credits were rolling, that it just left a bad taste. But besides the nitpick, the movie is very fun and worth your time! Just don’t think about the logistics of thousands of people on one spaceship.
