Wonder Woman 2 coming sooner to theaters
We’re getting the Wonder Woman sequel earlier than previously announced, and that’s a very good thing. Let’s talk the new date and what this means.
Forget December 13, 2019. Wonder Woman 2 will be arriving almost six weeks earlier than previously announced. The highly anticipated Wonder Woman sequel will now premiere November 1, 2019.
With so much riding on the success of the DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros wants its diamond to shine with an earlier release date that will allow it to dominate the box office all by itself.
The former December date pushed Wonder Woman dangerously close to the premiere of Star Wars: Episode IX. While it would have been interesting to see Wonder Woman go head to head with Rey and the Star Wars franchise, there was never a need to put the two juggernauts together. (Honestly, Wonder Woman should be a summer tentpole once again, which would have put the movie in direct competition with Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, debuting March 6, 2019)
So far the early buzz ahead of Justice League has been largely positive and after a box office shattering summer, there seems to be no end in sight for anything and everything Wonder Woman these days. The shift in release dates allows Wonder Woman to control the holiday box office, specifically the lucrative Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Even with Star Wars: Episode IX due in mid-December 2019, the Wonder Woman sequel will have a relatively clear path to six weeks at the top of the box office before Star Wars debuts.
