By Jason Hall
Wednesday is upon us yet again and it is never easy to figure out which comic books are worth your time and cash.
Let’s take a look at some of the exciting comic books hitting shelves this week.
Punisher #218: Written by Matthew Rosenberg and art by Guiu Vilanova. For over 200 issues and many years, Frank Castle has been waging a war in the streets between himself and the people who would threaten the safety of the innocent. He has almost always been on the outside and never truly accepted on anyone’s side, until now.
Marvel has told us that now a certain infamous one-eyed super spy has asked Castle to take his fight against crime on a global scale. We’ve seen the previews, but now we will find out how the Punisher finds his way into the armor of War Machine. Frank Castle’s war on crime has taken on many forms and now he is taking things to a whole other level.
Batman #35: Written by Tom King and art by Joelle Jones. Lately Batman and his lady love, Catwoman have been traveling. They are came head-to-head with the daughter of the Demon’s Head herself Talia Al Ghul. Batman has defied law and the word of his Justice League allies to confront her and now Selina will have to face the consequences. Last issue ended with Selina drawing a sword and facing down with Talia one-on-one.
Batman is going to need some help from his allies, but the bad news is that means he will have to expose his true intentions. It’s time for Bruce Wayne to keep a few less secrets. Also, just as a side note, the new chemistry of the Cat and Bat as a couple is working very well under the penmanship of Tom King. People often say couples can’t work together as heroes, but Batman may prove them wrong.
Ninja-K #1: Written by Christos Gage and art by Tomas Giorello. Ninjak has constantly been one of the shining stars in the belt of Valiant Comics. Now the series relaunches with new head writer Christos Gage. The Ninja Programme has protected the United Kingdom from threats foreign and domestic. A top secret division of MI-6, these Ninjas, have always been the first and last line of defense for queen and country. They are a small army of assassins and spies that protect the world. Now a mysterious new enemy is hunting and killing members of the Ninja Programme one by one. Colin King, the man known as Ninja-K, is next on the list.
Doctor Strange #381: Written by Donny Cates and art by Gabriel Hernandez Walta. Somehow Loki has been declared the Sorcerer Supreme. Is the world ready for the god of mischief as its mystical protector? He’s got the cloak, the spells and his charm. There are so many questions that need to be answered. Has Loki set aside his former ways and become a true hero? Is the god lies planning something even more nefarious than ever before? Also, where is Stephen Strange? Based on the new premise alone, this book is worth taking a look at.
Dark Nights: The Batman Who Laughs #1: Written by James Tynion IV and art by Riley Rossmo. DC’s latest big event of Dark Nights: Metal has led to a bevy of tie-in issues focusing on all the new dark multiverse versions of Batman and this one promises to take the cake. This issue tells the story of the darkest Batman of all. The Batman Who Laughs has everything that Bruce Wayne has, but none of the sympathy or sense of justice. Instead, all of that ingenuity and persistence has been turned into a monstrous amalgam of Joker and Batman. Everyone has been talking about this upcoming issue and it promises not to disappoint. This will be the most nightmarish version of Batman yet.
