Justice League Rotten Tomatoes score delayed

In an interesting move, Rotten Tomatoes will not release a score for Justice League until the day of the film’s release, raising eyebrows.

It used to be that critics’ reviews would come out the day before a movie’s premiere. Sometimes they even came out that same day. But now the tables have turned and after several critical misses, Justice League looks to benefit from Rotten Tomatoes’ decision to withhold a freshness score for the movie until just before its release.

Until now, Rotten Tomatoes has been releasing scores for movies several days ahead of their theatrical debuts. This time, they won’t release the critic’s scores until 12:01am Thursday morning. The explanation offered by Rotten Tomatoes is that the company wants to tie Justice League’s score release with the debut of their new Facebook show “See It/Skip It” to help drive buzz and traffic.

Adding to the fray is the decision by Warner Bros to embargo reviews until 2:50am Wednesday morning, the day before Justice League’s Thursday night screenings. This will limit the amount of critical buzz – positive and negative – ahead of the film’s release.

Clearly, when you look at both decisions it looks a bit suspicious. Warner Bros and DC’s most recent films, Wonder Woman aside, have not fared well with critics and it almost looks like this is an attempt to keep negative buzz from impacting ticket sales. There’s also the fact that Warner Bros owns a chunk of Rotten Tomatoes’ parent company.

Either way, whether Justice League has a Rotten Tomatoes score sooner or later than other movies probably won’t impact ticket sales that much. There has been a lot of excitement over the movie and even if it is awful, fans still get to see Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman so all is not lost.
