Gotham season 4, episode 9 review: Let Them Eat Pie
Reviewing the latest episode of Gotham.
What happened in the latest episode of Gotham? Let’s take a look.
Penguin is suspicious of Gordon’s promotion and thinks that Sophia is behind it when he declines an invitation to a dinner event that Sophia is throwing for the orphanage. Sophia gets on the phone ASAP to inform a peeved Gordon that Penguin is sniffing around. Pyg calls Gordon as well. They find a tent outside the GCPD with two dead people sitting at a table with a sign that says “vive le revolución”.
Bruce has been partying still and oversleeps when he walks into the kitchen to meet a disappointed Alfred. Alfred reminds him of who he is and that is their annual hiking trip today. Gordon takes a group of cops to search the Narrows after he finds out from Fox that the victims were homeless. After Fox calls to update him on the paper residue found on the victims’ fingers. Gordon heads to the old paper plant with Harper.
Unfortunately for Pyg, Gordon is just too good at being a detective. Gordon and Harper get ambushed by Pyg who abducts Harper. Doesn’t look like a great first day as Captain for Gordon, and the Press is there to remind him of it. However, Gordon is professional and lets the Press know that the GCPD promises to capture Pyg and bring Harper back.
Meanwhile, Penguin is still mad with suspicion and needs Martin’s help. Of course “Penguin Jr.” accepts to help out his mentor and prove his loyalty. Speaking of mentoring, Alfred is hoping that the hiking trip and opening up about his past will help Bruce move on from murdering Ra’s al Ghul. A little of teenage antics and lying, Bruce escapes Alfred and the camping trip. We find him later at Wayne Manner in the middle of a party with his friends when Alfred finally arrives to literary crash the party. Bruce atoms off yelling “stop trying to be my father and be my butler and clean this mess”.
Gordon figures out that Pyg plans on cooking these homeless people for Gotham elite, and knows the person who he plans to cook for. Because he doesn’t want the cops walking into a trap, Gordon decides to head up Sophia’s dinner party solo. Quite honestly, Pyg missed his calling as a Broadway actor. We’ve seen him so far as a GCPD cop, French chef, and now we whiteness his rendition of Cell Block Tango; Brava!
Other than betrayal, messing with his dinner is another way to infuriate Penguin. When Pyg reveals the secret ingredient in his people pie, he threatens to kill Martin if the table doesn’t eat their pies. Robin Taylor’s animal-like face-stuffing resembled Danny DeVito’s in Batman Returns bringing spine-chilling nostalgia for fans everywhere.
When we think that Pyg might have won, Gordon finally comes to save the day. Amazing fight scene to take place between Gordon and Pyg and a standing ovation to the choreography. After arresting Pyg, the Press waits outside of Sophia’s mansion to speak to the heroic Captain. Things are looking up for Gordon, the city loves him, he gets a kiss from Sophia, but trouble is around the corner. The episode ends with Martin informing Penguin “I saw Sophia kiss a policeman”.

I love the socialist theme of this episode. Even though Professor Pyg is a villain, his genius shines when he alluded to Marie Antoinette and Jonathan Swift. This thought-provoking episode didn’t just stop at social/political issues, we were seduced by emotional issues as well with Bruce’s turmoil. Bruce is finding out firsthand that avenging his parents’ death did not bring him closure. The lesson to learn, hopefully soon for Bruce, is that he can save others in Gotham from experiencing painstaking loss like he did. Also, Alfred is your father.
I would seriously rewatch this episode because it’s just that amazing. Captain Gordon and Professor Pyg just aced Let Them Eat Pie earning a grade of 5/5! Encore!
