This is a pretty big Wednesday for DC Comics, but there are still plenty of comic books worth looking at as well.

Let’s take a look at some of the exciting comic books hitting shelves this week.

Doomsday Clock #1: Written by Geoff Johns and art by Gary Frank. This is probably the biggest thing that DC Comics has attempted in a long while. It is very ambitious to reach back into a graphic novel so highly regarded as the Watchmen. They have been peppering hints and peeks at the arrival of these characters coming into the DC Universe proper.

We already know that characters like Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, and the Comedian were somehow responsible for the most recent relaunch of the DC Universe.

We don’t know their intentions or their motivations, but either way it is a pretty big deal. This also heralds the return of Geoff Johns to writing comics again. Lately, he has been a little busy with the upper management of DC and their various film projects. No matter how you feel about the incorporation of the Watchmen, this will be something you want to take a look at.

Betty and Veronica Vixens #1: Written by Jamie L. Rotante and art by Eva Cabrera. The world of Archie Comics is enjoying a brand new renaissance. The primary Archie series has been updated for modern times and doing very well. Riverdale is the highest rate series on the CW and shows no signs of slowing down. They’ve shown that there is plenty of room to experiment with these characters and this world. Now we are getting another new take on the Riverdale gang. The Vixens are the baddest biker gang in town and they are led by none other than our favorite fearsome twosome, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. This looks like a ton of fun and just the type of experimentation that can be done in comic books.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #13: Written by Jody Houser and art by Nick Roche. The tale of Spider-Man and his empowered family is jumping eight years into the future. Young Annie is now in high school and still learning how to fight crime and keep a normal life at the same time. Writer Jody Houser is taking over the creative duties on the series with this issue and the time jump presents a whole slew of opportunities for this alternate timeline of the Spider-family. I’ve enjoyed this series since its beginning and I’ve always been a fan of Spider-Man having a family. This is an exciting new age of Spider-Man and I’m looking forward to Houser’s new stories.

Detective Comics #969: Written by James Tynion IV and art by Eber Ferreira. The world of Batman is going strong these days. The primary series with Tom King is doing some big things and Dark Nights: Metal has been a ton of fun. While all of this has been going on, the Detective Comics series has been doing really solid story telling. James Tynion IV has been telling new personal stories about these characters that have been around for years. Tim Drake has finally returned from the inter-dimensional prison of Mr. Oz and it may be just in time to see the fall of Batmen. Now it looks like the team may finally fall apart. The enemies of Batman are digging into his bag of tricks and forming a team of their of their own to take on the Bat-family.

Invincible Iron Man #594: Written by Brian Michael Bendis and art by Stefano Caselli. The search for Tony Stark continues. Brian Michael Bendis is ending his run with Iron Man and with Marvel soon, but before he leaves he has some stories left to tell. Characters from the past, present, and future of Iron Man are coming together to help in the hunt for Tony Stark. The results of this search will also determine who will wield the power and title of Iron Man. This is being hailed as one of the most-anticipated moments in Iron Man history.

These are just a handful of the comics coming out this week. Be sure to hit your local shop and find something worth your thanks this year.
