Agents of SHIELD season 5: Watch the first 17 minutes of the premiere

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD released the first 17 minutes of the season 5 premiere.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD Season 5 is set to launch on December 1. Things are kicking off with a 2-hour premiere on ABC at 8 p.m. EST. The first episode, “Orientation,” promises to plunge Agent Coulson and his team into a cosmic adventure the likes of which they’ve never experienced before.

Now, Marvel’s released the first 17 minutes for our viewing pleasure. It’s most of the preview they unveiled to audiences at New York Comic Con, but it’s time for us all to experience the thrills.

Amusingly enough, it seems Marvel originally intended this to drop tomorrow, dropping teasers on Twitter.

The problem with scheduling things for publication on the internet? Sometimes the schedule goes wrong!

As you can see, the Agents of SHIELD premiere kicks off by revisiting the end of last season. We see the mysterious strike team head out to pick up Coulson and his allies, and it’s strongly hinted that they’re aliens. It looks as though conspiracy theorists like the Watchdogs really were correct all along. There really are aliens living among us in the wider MCU.

The team are brought before an Obelisk, similar in design to the one we saw in Season 3. Given they’re referred to as legends, it’s possible they’ve been transported through time as well as space. Naturally, Coulson’s the POV-character, and he emerges in a time-frozen environment that’s going through explosive decompression. It’s a tremendous scene, giving us a sense straight away of just how good this season could be.

It looks as though Agents of SHIELD is about to take on a whole new alien species. We’re introduced to the monsters known as ‘Roaches, and they’re absolutely savage. Then there are the so-called “True Believers,” who seem to be dedicated to the legend of SHIELD. That nod is a deep cut, one that’s sure to leave Marvel fans absolutely thrilled!

The whole thing is absolutely breathtaking. Marvel’s taken a very different style for Season 5, and you can see clear visual nods to the sci-fi horror Alien franchise. The ‘Roaches seem to be a race of cosmic vampires, monsters who suck the moisture out of their victims. This time round, the team are stripped of all their gadgets and equipment, and plunged into a setting they’ve never imagined before.
