After the Avengers: Infinity War trailer was released, the movie’s official synopsis went public. What should fans expect?

Hot on the heels of the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel has released an official synopsis for the film, which will serve as the culmination of ten long years of story-building, bringing together nearly all the disparate characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.Anthony and Joe Russo direct the film, which is produced by Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito , Victoria Alonso, Michael Grilo and Stan Lee are the executive producers. Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay. “Avengers: Infinity War” releases in U.S. theaters on May 4, 2018."

This is, of course, old news to all but the most casual Marvel fans, as Infinity War and its central villain, The Mad Titan Thanos, have been on the radar since the very first Avengers film, when audiences were first introduced to the sneering, purple Josh Brolin and his universe-spanning machinations.

Comic book readers (and skilled Googlers) are well aware of what Thanos and his potent gauntlet–powered by the Infinity Stones/Gems, the legendary McGuffins around which much of the MCU has revolved–can do. Still, with Marvel’s promise that the yet to be released film will function as a finale to all that has happened so far, there is a  feeling of excitement and uncertainty even among the most knowledgeable superhero aficionados, as there is a sense that the franchise is playing for keeps this time, and that, no matter the outcome, the MCU will never be the same again.
