Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel to see Jon Watts return
By Alex Hodgson
The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will feature the return of director Jon Watts.
Earlier this year, Marvel finally brought their flagship hero to the MCU in a solo film. Spider-Man: Homecoming was a tremendous success that many would argue was the best portrayal of the wall-crawler yet. Much of this was down to the direction of Jon Watts, and today, it was confirmed that he will return for the 2019 sequel.
Watts got the best out of his cast, particularly Peter Parker actor, Tom Holland. Holland delivered us yet another unique incarnation of the web-slinger and not only that, he gave us arguably the best on-screen version of the character yet.
The previous incumbents of the role, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, were both praised for their portrayal of the character. However, they both had something missing; Maguire was a great Peter Parker, but his Spider-Man was missing something and Garfield’s Spidey was fantastic, but his Peter Parker was somewhat lacking. Holland managed to marry the two personas together, and this is thanks to Jon Watts.
The deal took a little longer than we thought
While it might have seemed to be a given that Watts would direct the sequel, it has taken a little bit longer than we thought to confirm the news. But thankfully, Marvel Studios oracle, Kevin Feige, confirmed the news at CCXP in Brazil, much to the delight of the audience.
Watts stated that his inspiration for Spider-Man: Homecoming were the coming-of-age movies of the ’80s, and this was evident from the film. Peter Parker’s high school tribulations were straight out of John Hughes’s highly successful films – there’s even a direct homage to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – and this was a great move. Watts clearly understood that Peter Parker is just as important to the Spider-Man mythos as the superhero action, and this allowed him to create the best on-screen version of the wall-crawler yet.
