Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 casting video surfaces for Gwen Stacy

The Spider-Man sequel may be casting Gwen Stacy, according to a casting video that went public. Could her origins be changed?

In the Spider-Man anthology, there are few characters who’ve impacted Peter Parker’s life more than Gwen Stacy. In fact, I’d wager that he may love her more than he does Mary Jane. This importance makes Gwen’s character a necessity in the Spider-Man movies. The good news is Marvel is putting their best foot forward. It looks like Marvel and Sony are aware of Gwen’s necessity and have begun auditioning for her in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Comicbook.com has reported that a French actress who goes by the name Louna has been seen auditioning for the role of Gwen Stacy (an audition tape revealed by Omega Underground). In the comics books and the two Spider-Man arcs previous to Homecoming, Gwen had blonde hair and blue eyes. Louna has neither and speaks with a heavy French accent. If this remains, we will a twist on Gwen’s appearance and possibly her origin.

This change shouldn’t shock fans of the Spider-Man movies or the comics. Most recently, Mary Jane was changed completely in Homecoming.  There are plenty of differences between MJ in the movie counterpart in the comics. She doesn’t share MJ’s personality, race, or even her first name (in Homecoming, her name is Michelle).

If this report is true and Louna gets the role as Gwen Stacy, we could be looking at another change in Spidey’s newest anthology. It’s also possible that her hair gets dyed blond and contacts are used to alter her eye color. Although considering the direction of the Marvel movies so far, I doubt it. Especially with characters like Flash and Ned being changed dramatically from their source in the comics.

A reason why Spider-Man 3 is thought of so poorly is the way it treated Gwen Stacy. She was used as a pawn in the already poor storyline. While the two Amazing Spider-Man movies portrayed Gwen flawlessly and, more importantly, the way most comic book fans expected her to be represented.

Regardless of what happens with Louna next, it’s interesting to see where Marvel and Sony will take us with the Spider-Man story and especially Gwen Stacy. The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for release until July of 2019.
