Arrow season 6: Will the team actually stay disbanded?

Arrow’s midseason finale featured dissension and problems for season 6’s second half.

At the end of Arrow‘s mid-season finale, the team disbanded. Thanks to some irreconcilable differences, Team Arrow became broken in two; Oliver, Felicity and Diggle became one team while Dinah, Curtis and Rene all left the bunker. The question remains: will they stay this way?

It was revealed that one of Team Arrow was going to testify that Oliver was the Green Arrow to Samantha Watson and immediately, doubt was thrown over every member of the team. Oliver began to question everybody and even ordered Felicity to spy on the whereabouts of Dinah, Curtis and Rene. It was here that the fractures began to form.

Dinah has known the identity of Vigilante for some time and has been keeping it to herself; his true identity is Vince Sobel, her former lover who she believed to have died the same night she got her powers. When the team discovered that Dinah had a clandestine meeting with him, the questions were raised of her loyalty. When they confronted her, Rene revealed himself to be the real witness.

Later, the team is out on a mission and Rene breaks Oliver’s orders. Luckily, his actions end up saving the day, but Oliver chastises him and this is the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Rene declare’s he’s tired of Oliver always tell him what to do and he storms out. Dinah and Curtis follow suit as they feel violated and that putting them under surveillance proved that Oliver didn’t trust them.

Could this be a good thing?

It seems the team has fractured beyond repair, with only Oliver’s closest companions remaining by his side. The new recruits all have valid reasons to be offended by Oliver’s actions, but the truth is, it could be a good thing that they’ve gone their separate ways.

More from Opinion

While it seems that we’ve been here before (not least, season 5, episode 8 “Disbanded”), this time around there are a few more interesting possibilities that arise. For one, there’s the chance that Rene, Curtis and Dinah could form their own vigilante team. They’ve all proven themselves in the field and Curtis could certainly provide useful tech support. If they did, it’d be interesting to see them as direct competition to Team Arrow; former colleagues would cross paths and not necessarily get along. Not only this, they’d be able to prove themselves to Ollie, to show him that he needs them.

Another interesting consequence of the team disbanding is that we’re left with the original Team Arrow. This was possibly the idea of the writers in that it brought the show back to basics, much like Season 5’s return to the darker tone proved successful in breathing new life into the show. Seeing Ollie, Diggle and Felicity working together again will show just how much they’ve grown as a unit, or it’ll show just how much they relied on the new team.

Should Team Arrow reunite?

If anything proved the value of Oliver’s team, it was the season 5 episode “Disbanded.” At this point, Adrian Chase/Prometheus had finally broken the Green Arrow and Oliver had given up, believing himself to be a killer. The team carried on without him and tried to carry on his mission to protect Star City.

The only thing that snapped Oliver out of his sorrow, was the team, particularly Diggle, and it was the team who made him realize that they help him be the person he wants to be: a hero, rather than a killer.

While it’ll be fun to see the two teams at odds for a while, it’s surely only a matter of time before Team Arrow reunites once more to take on Cayden James’s team of villains.
