Vice Admiral Holdo
One of the new characters introduced in this film was Vice Admiral Holdo, who took over as temporary leader of the Resistance after Leia went into a coma and Admiral Ackbar and the rest of the leadership had perished. As I pointed out in my review, she had an intriguing relationship with Poe Dameron as the two characters had conflicting ideas on how to save the Resistance.
As the First Order reached closer to the Raddus and her people headed for safety, Amilyn Holdo made the heroic decision to stay back and go down with the ship. In an epic moment of sacrifice, Holdo jumped to lightspeed and sliced right through the Mega-class Star Destroyer Supremacy, demolishing both ships. This allowed the Resistance to escape to the planet Crait, where they could have another chance at escaping the First Order’s wrath. While it was unfortunate to see such a unique character go out so soon, it truly raised the stakes for the third act of the film.

Supreme Leader Snoke
Most Star Wars fans probably assumed that Supreme Leader Snoke would continue to train Kylo Ren to be a menacing Sith Lord (similar to his grandfather, Darth Vader) until Episode IX, where either Kylo or Rey would strike him down, defeat him and save the day. Nope. Snoke perished a bit earlier than we expected and as a result, it has spun the story in an unpredictable direction.
In a confrontation between Snoke, Rey and Kylo Ren on the Supremacy, the Supreme Leader reveals the shocking twist that he was the puppet master behind Rey and Kylo’s force visions and that he manipulated his apprentice into luring the Jedi-in-training so that he could retrieve the location of Luke Skywalker. Blinded by his overconfidence, Snoke ordered Kylo Ren to strike down Rey, but instead, Kylo used the Force, ignited Rey’s lightsaber and slashed his master in half. This was hands-down one of the best moments from The Last Jedi as it truly broke our expectations.
