Captain Phasma

Finn knocked Phasma to the ground with his Z6 batton and left the First Order captain totally helpless. As the antagonist stutters her final words, Finn watches the floor beneath Phasma crumble away as she falls to her fiery death. Just like Boba Fett’s ‘death’ in Return of the Jedi, fans could argue that Captain Phasma survived the explosion and will live on for another day. As stated in the Phasma novel, “Phasma will do anything to survive.”

Captain Phasma was completely underutilized in The Force Awakens, but fans hoped that director Rian Johnson would give her a bigger role in The Last Jedi. Unfortunately, it looks like fans shouldn’t have got their hopes up as Phasma’s character didn’t even make it out of this film alive. After BB-8 saved Finn and Rose from being executed by the chrome-plated stormtrooper, Finn and Phasma entered a short duel.

Luke Skywalker

This was a rough one. One of the most iconic and beloved fictional heroes of all-time met his ultimate death in The Last Jedi. In the final act of the film, Luke Skywalker presumably leaves Ahch-To and travels to Crait to save the tiny remainder of the Resistance from crumbling. Kylo Ren sees his old master and tries to strike him down in an epic lightsaber duel.

Eventually, Luke revealed himself to be nothing more than a Force projection and told him that he would not be the last Jedi before disappearing.  This distraction allowed the Resistance to escape with Rey on the Millennium Falcon and flee to safety. Back on Ahch-To, an exhausted Luke climbed on to his meditation rock and looked out to the double suns on the horizon, signifying that there is still hope. The last Jedi humbly fades away and becomes one with the Force, leaving only his Jedi robe behind.

This was an extremely emotional moment for life-long Star Wars fans as they just saw their childhood hero pass away. However, his death was handled so perfectly that his death became more satisfying that heartbreaking. Unlike the rest of these characters, there’s a high chance that we see Mark Hamill reprise the role of Luke Skywalker as a Force ghost in Star Wars: Episode IX.
