2. World War Hulk Battle – Iron Man Director of SHIELD 19

This selection is actually a pretty small story that many people may have forgotten about. Once upon a time, the Hulk was launched into space by Mr. Fantastic, Nick Fury, Tony Stark, Doctor Strange and Black Bolt. They did because they decided it was best for the safety of mankind and for Bruce Banner. Unsurprisingly, the Hulk was not so happy about being thrown into outer space. He returned stronger than ever with his own army and a thirst for vengeance for those that wronged him. Once Hulk made it back to Earth, Iron Man was the first to confront him.

The fight took place in the pages of the World War Hulk crossover, but the story I want to focus on followed the fight from another point of view. At this time in the comics, Tony Stark was the Director of SHIELD. This single issue follows his confrontation with the Hulk and is narrated by Tony Stark himself. The narration throughout the battle explains how Tony Stark won’t let anyone die for him. He might be arrogant, but he sees himself as the protector of the world. Fueled by the guilt of his past actions, Tony Stark would rather sacrifice himself than risk the lives of others. This issue says everything that make Stark who he is in one tight story.
