3.Extremis – Iron Man Vol. 4 1-6

This story rewrote Iron Man’s origins slightly for a more modern audience and introduced another new version of his armor. This wasn’t a reboot, but it was a relaunch of the character as a whole. The Iron Man armor and Tony Stark truly would become one after this story and would fuel Tony Stark stories for years to come. After a brutal attack, Iron Man is forced to inject himself with the experimental serum known as Extremis.

The Extremis tech makes Stark more machine than man and literally means he can turn into Iron Man at will from now on. The suit actually comes from within him now and his mental capacity is expanded into a harder drive-like thinking process. He can make back-ups of his memory and even download new things directly into his cerebellum. This story was the basis for the third Iron Man movie and things would never be the same for Tony Stark after the events of Extremis.
