5. Wonder Woman
Now enter the DCEU’s true beacon of hope: Wonder Woman. While Man of Steel was met with a mixed reception, with most sentiment leaning towards a positive view of the film, the two next movies in DC’s slate garnered the exact opposite. As previously mentioned, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad weren’t well-received. Due to a number of issues that stems from poor character arcs to convoluted plots to specific moments (e.g. “Martha”), these movies underperformed in the eyes of many. The DCEU seemed to be doomed, but then came Wonder Woman.
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman brought light into the rather dark DCEU. Through Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Diana we got to see the rise of a powerful woman, destined for greatness. Through Chris Pine’s portrayal of Steve Trevor we saw a soldier without fear, reminiscent but also uniquely different from soldiers like Captain America. Their on-screen dynamic was also a spectacle in and of itself, with many funny moments that only elevated the film. That said, the film still has some problems.
In its attempt to differentiate itself from the past DCEU movies, Wonder Woman’s lightheadedness didn’t mix well with it’s Zack Snyder-esque cinematography. Additionally, the film had one of the worst villains in a superhero movie, ever. Nevertheless, despite its problems, Wonder Woman was a phenomenal moviegoing experience.
