Disney needs to bring back X-Men: The Animated Series

While everyone else is geeking at the thought of the X-Men joining the MCU — there’s another part of the X-Men universe we want Marvel to bring back.

Now that Disney finally has the X-men in their grasp rumors and reports have talked about the endless possibilities — from the X-Men joining the Avengers to a Wolverine Hulk spin-off. However, there’s something we can get that’s even better, more valuable than the X-Men joining the Avengers — the return of X-Men: The Animated Series.

I admit that this is 100 percent pure nostalgia, but anyone old enough to remember the epicenes that was Fox’s X-Men: The Animated Series will appreciate why we need Marvel to bring it back. In 1992, Fox Kids debuted X-Men on October 31 and lasted 5 seasons, from 1992-1997, with 76 episodes. It would be cool to see a rebooted version premiere on Disney XD.

This series followed the already established heroes as Professor Xavier’s X-Men as they were joined by a new teenage member named Jubilee. The series started off introducing fans to Jubilee who was being chased by a Sentinel due to her developing mutant powers — from there the epic linear journey began.

After the memorable theme, throughout the series, the ideologies of Magneto and Professor X was fully explored. Professor X as the peaceful activist who wanted mutant and humankind to be integrated. And Magneto, the mutant activist who wanted mutants and humans to live in a world separated from one another and he would do so by any means necessary. The message was strong and the two characters were depicted as creator Chris Claremont and Jim Lee intended.

Other than the ideological battle between two former friends fans go to see a number of other character and some amazing storylines both fresh and from the comics. Some of the characters that became fan favorites were Jubilee, Gambit, Wolverine, and an animated series original, Morph. He was the shape-shifting comedic mutant who was the only man who could make Wolverine laugh. Morph was made more for the show and his death in the series served as the coffin for Cyclops and Wolverine’s friendship. This happened after Wolverine resented Cyclops for making the call to leave Morph and Beast behind which resulted in the former’s death.  The darkness of the X-Men will be a welcomed to animated universe especially with the characters they had like, Mister Sinister.

When Sinister was introduced the series was turned upside down, in a good way. Sinister’s introduction saw him kidnap Cyclops and Jean in an effort to create the perfect mutant. He also saved Morph and used him as a pawn to help split up the X-Men. Sinister was also responsible for robbing Magento and Professor X of their powers after luring them to a remote island. Although he was defeated, he would become a dangerous reoccurring foe. Since we have yet see Sinister depicted on the big screen, it’ll be cool to see Marvel bring him back to the animated series. There’s some freshness to his story that could be depicted in the new series like how he assigned Gambit to lead a team to kill the Morlocks. Speaking of the Morlocks, the animated series gifted fans with one of the best episodes in TV history. It was Storm versus the leader of the Morlocks, Callisto, a battle that would be embedded in the memories of all the fans of the 92′ series.

In addition, we got to see backstories of so many characters like Colossus, Storm, and Rogue. Because of the show, Rogue became a fan favorite, and one of the reasons so many was disappointed in the live-action depiction of her. For people that never read the comics, the animated series provided us with an in-depth look at who Rogue was and the horrible life she endured.

The show had no boundaries and explored so much of the X-Men Universe whether it was the Phoenix Saga or Professor X’s bastard son, Legion and a crossover episode with Spider-Man. X-Men: The Animated series was a true treat and one of the main priorities for Disney should be to reboot the 1992 classic.
