4. Hawkeye #2-13
Kelly Thompson has quickly become one of my favorite writers. One of her comic books usually finds itself on one of my top ten lists. Only this year it isn’t Jem & the Holograms! Instead it’s this series she’s done alongside artists Leonardo Romero and Michael Walsh. In addition, Jordie Bellaire’s covers simply set the mood perfectly for each issue. While Hawkeye is a well known franchise, this time the star is the younger archer, Kate Bishop, of Young Avengers fame!
Set in California, Hawkeye is the 1980s era crime-mystery series readers never knew they wanted. Kate sets up a private eye business to track down her dad, and ends up stumbling onto way more. Furthermore, Thompson quickly establishes one of the best supporting casts of any Marvel Comic series for her heroine, who liven up any adventure! The series has seen her take on super-powered frat boys, dragons, and villains like Madame Masque either alone, or with Jessica Jones or Wolverine.
As the series closes out the year, one bit of bad news has risen. It is among the series announced as canceled by Marvel recently. This means that this latest arc, in which Kate once again unites with Clint Barton (the original Hawkeye) will be the last. It is quite a shame, yet these days any comic which makes it past a dozen issues is akin to a miracle! Between Kate’s sass, flair for narration and Romero’s jaw-dropping sequences, this will be a series which will always be remembered.
