6. Saga #41-48

Remember when I mentioned that certain series always win top ten comic books lists? Saga is usually one of those titles. Everyone expects to see it on a list like this. Yet this isn’t because of snobbery, it is because Saga is genuinely one of the best comic books out there today. It represents the pinnacle of both of its creators’ careers, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. The adventure of a blended family from two warring worlds struggling to raise a daughter has taken the world by storm.

Due to an unexpected lateness, 2017 actually saw more issues than average! The year began with a cliffhanger on the planet Phang, which was a metaphor for third world countries. Always on the cutting edge of political commentary without getting partisan, the rest of the year’s been spent on a literal “abortion planet.” It’s been a year where Alana has dealt with stillbirth, Petrichor and Sir Robot found love, and Hazel has learned that ghosts can fart, and that life is both fun and cruel.

Every issue is chock full of Fiona Staples’ amazing designs and art, and Vaughan’s amazing dialogue. It seems like every issue has a quotable quote somewhere. The cast of characters is ever expanding, yet Saga is one of those comic books where no one is safe. Other books confuse the juvenile with the mature. Saga is truly a mature book, and will be remembered in the future the same way 1980s Vertigo books are remembered now. It is the definition of an instant classic.
